Who are We?

Seeds Community Café serves locally sourced food to people regardless of their ability to pay. If they cannot pay, guests can exchange an hour of service for their meal. We believe that food has the power to change lives. We empower people through food by providing access to fresh food, job training and education. Our nonprofit bridges a critical gap in our community and contributes to local food sustainability.

What Do We Do?

We provide a hand up, not a hand out, bringing together people in an atmosphere of inclusion and dignity, sealed with the common bond of a shared meal. Guests enjoy a healthy, organic, locallysourced meal and pay what they believe is fair for it. We positively impact food insecurity and create community.

The Fable of the Stone Soup

There are many variations on this old German fable, and the following is our version. The moral is essentially the same: We can accomplish more when we pool our resources and work together.

It is this concept that inspired SEEDS Community Café.

Once upon a time there was a kindly traveler who came to a small village, tired and weary from his long journey. The traveler did not have anything to eat and hoped that a friendly villager would be able to feed him. He came to the first house and knocked on the door. He asked the woman who answered if she could spare just a small bit of food as he had traveled a long journey and was very hungry. The woman replied “I’m sorry I have nothing to give you. I can barely feed my own family.” Most of the villagers moved toward their homes and locked their doors and windows.

Undaunted, the traveler went to the village square, took a large tin cooking pot from his bag and filled it with water, started a fire and from a silky bag he drew an ordinary looking stone and ceremoniously dropped it in the water. As the water began to warm he sighed and said “A good soup needs salt and pepper.” Since that was not so much to give-up, one of the villagers sent his daughter to fetch some salt and pepper. The villager’s daughter said rather loudly “Oh, I do love stone soup, but stone soup with carrots…that’s hard to beat.” Overhearing this, another villager sent his son to get a carrot hidden in the cellar. “Magnificent, thank you!” exclaimed the traveler. In time a crowd began to gather offering their own favorite ingredient: onions, potatoes, mushrooms, cabbage. The aroma was tantalizing and anticipation grew. “A great soup would be even better with bread and cider.” A villager proudly declared and brought them forth. Now it was a feast, where there was none before, that the traveler happily shared with the villagers. Everyone agreed they had never before tasted anything as delicious and they sang and danced and celebrated well into the night.

The next day as the traveler was preparing to leave the village elder offered him a large sum of money for the magic stone. The traveler declined and started down the road. As he left he came upon a large group of children standing near the road. He gave the silken bag with the stone in it to the youngest child whispering with a wink “It was not the stone but the villagers that performed the magic.”
